The Liberal Party Of Australia Supports The Legalization Of E-cigarette Retail Sales And The Introduction Of E-cigarette Taxes.

On May 1st, the Liberal Party of Australia stated that if they win the federal election, they will allow the sale of e-cigarettes in retail stores and introduce an e-cigarette tax to regulate the e-cigarette industry. This move is expected to generate approximately 3.6 billion Australian dollars in tax revenue within four years.
The Liberal Party believes that currently, illegal e-cigarettes have become widespread in Australia, and the current e-cigarette policy has clearly failed, causing the government to face management challenges. Currently, e-cigarettes are only allowed to be sold in pharmacies, which has led to the flourishing of the black market. The Liberal Party claims that the legalization of e-cigarette retail and the introduction of an e-cigarette tax will effectively combat organized criminal activities and gradually eliminate the e-cigarette black market.
Specifically, the Liberal Party advocates no longer restricting e-cigarettes to be sold only in pharmacies, but allowing them to be sold in traditional retail channels such as supermarkets, convenience stores, and gas stations. At the same time, an e-cigarette tax similar to that of cigarettes should be imposed, which could increase the national revenue by approximately 3.6 billion Australian dollars within four years.
Australian Finance Minister Jim Chalmers opposed the ideas of the Liberal Party and refuted that e-cigarettes are "the gateway to smoking", accusing the Liberal Party of profiting from people's use of e-cigarettes. He was unconcerned about the issue of lost revenue from the black market and claimed that the government hopes to keep children away from e-cigarettes.
On May 3rd, the preliminary vote count results of the Australian federal parliamentary election showed that the ruling party, the Labor Party, had obtained a majority of seats in the House of Representatives in this election. The leader of the Labor Party, the current Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, will be re-elected as the Prime Minister of Australia.
