On February 20, 2026, the Ministry of Health of Myanmar announced that it had officially issued a ban, prohibiting the import, export, sale, storage, possession, use of electronic cigarettes, electronic water pipes and related accessories.
This ban was authorized by the Cabinet on February 18 and implemented in accordance with the "Basic Materials and Services Law", aiming to curb the growing trend of teenagers using electronic cigarette products.
The Ministry of Health warned that legal actions would be taken against all individuals or businesses that violated the ban. Currently, there are still illegal sales activities in the online and offline markets in Myanmar, and the regulatory authorities have strengthened monitoring and inspections.
Now, among the 11 countries in Southeast Asia, only Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines currently have no form of electronic cigarette ban. Among them, Malaysia announced last autumn that it would reverse its lenient electronic cigarette laws and plan to re-impose the ban.
Brunei and East Timor prohibit the sale of electronic cigarettes, but personal possession or use is not illegal. Myanmar will become one of the countries in Southeast Asia with the strictest laws, not only prohibiting the sale of electronic cigarettes, but also prohibiting personal possession and use, similar to the electronic cigarette laws of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Singapore.
