Samsung Was Ordered To Pay $10.9 Million in Compensation Due To An Electronic Cigarette Battery Explosion Incident.

On June 23rd, the Georgia State Court of Appeals ruled that Samsung Electronics' US company must pay $10.9 million in compensation to a man named Jordan Brewer. Brewer previously claimed that the Samsung battery inside an electronic cigarette device in his pants pocket exploded, causing him serious injuries.
Brewer filed a lawsuit against Samsung in July 2020. Since Samsung did not respond to Brewer's lawsuit, a county court judge made an缺席 judgment against Samsung in September 2020. In December 2020, Samsung requested the court to revoke the缺席 judgment, but the court stated: "Samsung's practice of adopting an internal handling process for similar lawsuits is a 'failed legal strategy', 'an intentional act of disregarding proper legal procedures, or serious negligence'."
However, in 2022, Samsung filed a motion with a new judge, who revoked the judgment on the grounds that the compensation amount was unclear and there was no hearing record. Brewer appealed, arguing that Samsung failed to fulfill its responsibility to prove the reasonableness of revoking the judgment.
This week, the Georgia State Court of Appeals ruled that the lower court incorrectly shifted the burden of proof to Brewer and should not have revoked the judgment on the grounds of incomplete records. The appellate court revoked the previous ruling to require a retrial based on the correct legal standards. Since the original judgment has been revoked,Samsung's attempt to appeal against the ruling of absence was rejected.
