On March 19, 2026 local time, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced that during a special law enforcement operation targeting the state's electronic cigarette wholesale and distribution channels, law enforcement authorities seized over 28,500 pounds (approximately 13 tons) of illegal electronic cigarette products. The involved entity was the large electronic cigarette distributor Ecto World LLC (operating under the name Demand Vape), whose headquarters is located in Buffalo. This law enforcement operation was led by the New York State Department of Health Investigation Bureau and lasted for a total of three months. The police simultaneously launched operations in Nassau County and Orange County, intercepting multiple batches of goods transported from Buffalo to secondary distributors and unlicensed retail stores across the state.
The investigation revealed that Demand Vape had been illegally transporting large quantities of electronic cigarette products to secondary distributors and unlicensed retail stores throughout the state. During this operation, law enforcement officers seized a total of over 26,000 pounds (more than 570 cases) of goods in Nassau County and approximately 2,761 pounds (more than 60 cases) of goods in Orange County, totaling over 28,500 pounds. These seized products were labeled with the Demand Vape logo and most of them were destined for retail terminals in Long Island and Orange County.
Governor Hochul of New York State stated in her statement: "Illegal electronic cigarette products pose a serious threat to the health of New York residents, especially to teenagers. This seizure operation is a major victory for public safety and sends a clear signal that New York State will not tolerate any illegal business activities that endanger community safety."
This law enforcement operation by New York State against Demand Vape is an example of the federal and local levels jointly strengthening regulation of the electronic cigarette industry. As the requirements for the compliance of electronic cigarette products in the US market become increasingly strict, especially in areas related to the protection of minors and patent infringement, the business risks faced by distributors and manufacturers are rapidly increasing.
