The Governor Of New York State Has Vowed To Crack Down Hard On Illegal Electronic Cigarettes.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced that she would intensify efforts to combat illegal flavored e-cigarettes and instructed the New York State Tax and Finance Department to establish a list of electronic cigarette products (Vapor Products Registry) to clearly identify which products can be legally sold in New York State. Hochul stated that although the New York State and federal governments had already issued relevant bans as early as 2020, currently, approximately 99% of e-cigarettes on the market in New York are flavored products, and none have received authorization from the US FDA. Many of these products are manufactured in China and are targeted primarily at teenagers. The electronic cigarette product registration system has now been implemented in more than ten states, with the aim of giving law enforcement agencies clear seizure powers, so as to quickly confiscate unregistered products, combat the illegal supply chain, and provide support for legal retailers. Law enforcement agencies, including the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and the New York City Sheriff's Office, have discovered in recent years that illegal e-cigarettes are often associated with broader criminal activities. Edgar Domenech, who was the former New York City Police Chief and formulated the "New York Anti-Illegal Tobacco Enforcement Strategy" during Bloomberg's tenure, said: "New York has become the center of illegal nicotine transactions. These illegal Chinese flavored e-cigarettes have exacerbated an already severe situation. Establishing a clear electronic cigarette product registration list will provide law enforcement agencies with necessary information and transparency, helping them quickly identify contraband, protect our children, and shut down those almost always associated with dangerous and violent crimes."
