The European Union Has Approved A One-time Ban On Electronic Cigarettes in Bulgaria.

On March 16th, the European Commission approved legislation in Bulgaria prohibiting the sale, promotion and distribution of disposable electronic cigarettes. After the approval, Bulgaria initiated a three-month transitional period. After the end of the transitional period, disposable electronic cigarettes must be removed from the market. The existing inventory can be sold, recalled or exported.
This decision was issued in accordance with the framework of the EU Tobacco Products Directive and was considered reasonable, necessary and moderate. It aims to protect public health, especially in the context of the continuously rising usage rate of electronic cigarettes among teenagers. The Bulgarian authorities cited data showing that one quarter of 13 to 15-year-old students use electronic cigarettes.
After the approval, Bulgaria will start to implement this regulation, requiring retailers to clear their inventories or remove the products during the transitional period, and can choose to export the remaining inventory. This follows similar measures in other EU countries and reflects the increasingly evident trend of strengthening the regulation of disposable electronic cigarettes within the region. Policy makers hope to curb the use of electronic cigarettes among minors and reduce nicotine addiction among the teenage population through this measure.
Since then, Bulgaria has become the third EU country to fully ban disposable electronic cigarettes after France and Belgium. This highlights the increasing regulatory trend for disposable nicotine products in Europe.
