According to the Sydney Morning Herald on November 2nd: The Australian Border Force (ABF) recently seized a batch of electronic cigarettes hidden in containers at the Sydney International Container Terminal. The total number exceeded 115,000, with an estimated value of 4.5 million Australian dollars.
This is another large-scale seizure incident that has attracted attention since Australia implemented an import ban on electronic cigarettes in early 2024.
The goods were originally labeled as "furniture" and were loaded onto a ship at the Shenzhen Port in China, destined for the Australian home goods market.
However, intelligence indicated that these containers were actually an illegal transportation channel for electronic cigarettes. After investigation, the law enforcement authorities seized a total of four containers from the same ship, with almost all of them containing products of the same brand of electronic cigarettes.
The relevant departments pointed out that this brand had rapidly occupied the Australian black market channel in the past year and had become one of the most common illegal electronic cigarettes.
There is suspected to be an organized criminal group behind it, using threats and blackmail to expand market share, which is causing continuous vigilance at the law enforcement and regulatory levels.
Although this seizure was not the largest in terms of quantity, its high concentration and strong organization level highlight the complexity and internationalization trend of the Australian electronic cigarette black market structure.
