The Attorneys General From 25 States Jointly Put Pressure On Shopify, Demanding That It Stop Providing Services To Illegal E-cigarette Websites.

According to a report by Reuters on November 25th:
At least 25 state attorneys general in the United States have sent letters to Shopify, demanding that the platform stop providing hosting services for websites selling illegal electronic cigarettes and establish a long-term cooperation mechanism with various state law enforcement agencies to cut off the online sales channels of unlicensed electronic cigarettes in the United States.
This letter was led by the Office of the Attorney General of California, and was also signed by judicial departments in Illinois, Arizona, New York, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico. The letter stated that many websites were selling electronic cigarette products without legal licenses or in violation of relevant US regulations, and requested Shopify to more comprehensively identify and remove non-compliant customers. The states also plan to make similar requests to other website hosting service providers.
The US FDA currently authorizes only 39 electronic cigarette products for legal sales in the United States, but the market has been occupied by a large number of unregulated devices for many years, especially the fruit-flavored and sweet一次性 electronic cigarettes made in China. California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated in the letter: "Blocking the sale of illegal electronic cigarettes at the source will make regulation faster and more effective." He emphasized that this is related to public health risks.
The letter also mentioned that Shopify cooperated with California to remove some non-compliant sellers in April this year, but the state attorneys general believed that a "more comprehensive solution" should be introduced to deal with the expanding unregulated electronic cigarette market.
This action is the latest case of the United States' continuous tightening of regulation on the illegal electronic cigarette industry in recent years. Earlier this year, the US Postal Service blocked key distribution channels, and the Trump administration had previously carried out large-scale surprise operations and imposed high tariffs on Chinese electronic cigarettes.
