Scotland, UK: Ban On Disposable Electronic Cigarettes Postponed Until June Next Year

Scotland, UK: Ban on disposable electronic cigarettes postponed until June next year

英国苏格兰:一次性电子烟禁令推迟至明年6月生效

The Scottish government has announced that the ban on disposable electronic cigarettes will be postponed until June next year to keep pace with other regions in the UK. On the 22nd and 24th of this month, the Welsh and English governments respectively announced on their official websites that they will ban the use of disposable electronic cigarettes starting from June 2025.

According to a BBC report on October 25th, Scotland announced that it will postpone the ban on disposable electronic cigarettes by two months until June next year, in order to align with other regions in the UK.

The UK Parliament plans to completely ban the sale of disposable electronic cigarette products from June 1st next year, while the regulation originally scheduled to come into effect by the Scottish Parliament on April 1st will undergo a date adjustment. Scottish Health Secretary Neil Gray announced that the effective date will now be adjusted to achieve nationwide coordination and consistency.

The Scottish government is the first government in the UK to commit to taking action on disposable electronic cigarettes

Our four regions are working closely together to ensure a consistent approach to the sales and supply ban of disposable electronic cigarettes, so that we can provide certainty for businesses and consumers

A report released by the Scottish government last year showed that 22% of minors (approximately 78000 people) had used e-cigarettes, with more young people using e-cigarettes than smokers. However, the new regulations in the UK do not provide a transition period for businesses, and retailers need to clear their disposable e-cigarette inventory before the deadline.

This move has also raised concerns in the industry, warning that it may lead to an increase in illegal sales.

Mary Creagh, the UK Minister for Circular Economy, pointed out that disposable electronic cigarettes are "wasteful and damaging to our cities".

This is the first step towards a circular economy, in which we will use resources for longer periods of time, reduce waste, accelerate the process of achieving net zero emissions, and create thousands of job opportunities nationwide

This measure is unrelated to the government's plan to gradually eliminate smoking by banning the sale of cigarettes to people born after January 2009. The relevant bill is expected to be submitted to parliament before Christmas.
