The Largest Electronic Cigarette Seizure Operation in U.S. History: Nearly $9 Million Worth Of Illegal Products Were Confiscated in Chicago

According to a report by UPI on September 10th, multiple federal agencies in the United States jointly carried out law enforcement actions in Chicago, seizing nearly 90 million US dollars (approximately 650 million yuan) of illegal e-cigarette products, claiming it to be "the largest seizure in history".
Involved parties: The main target of this surprise operation was 37 importers, most of whom were from China.
Regulatory authorities: The US Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) jointly participated.
Reason for seizure: The products did not obtain the mandatory pre-market authorization (PMTA) from the FDA and were classified as unapproved illegal products; at the same time, some of the goods had ambiguous, misleading declarations and false valuations, attempting to evade customs duties and security reviews.
Official statement: FDA Commissioner Marty Makary emphasized that unapproved e-cigarettes will be confiscated, detained, and even destroyed, especially to prevent minors from accessing "dangerous and addictive" products.
Law enforcement scale: The FDA and CBP stated that in the past cooperation, they have prevented over 6 million pieces and a total value of over 120 million US dollars of illegal e-cigarettes from entering the country.
Follow-up measures: The 37 involved importers have been contacted one by one and informed that providing false information is a federal crime and they must respond to relevant inquiries within 30 days.
