The e-cigarette company Juul Labs is attempting to make a comeback and refocus on its original intention of helping adult smokers quit smoking.
James Sagan, an investor at Architect Capital, joined Juul in 2023. He said, "Everyone thought Juul was dead and had a bad reputation. But the early investors and the founders injected a lot of funds into the company to save it."
The new generation device Juul 2 is the key to this revival. This e-cigarette features biometric protection measures, restricting access only to adult smokers. Users must verify their age and identity through the accompanying application on their smartphones, using facial recognition or other mobile biometric technologies. Each cartridge contains a chip, and only authorized users can unlock it.
Sagan stated that the founders of Juul, James Munsith and Adam Bowen, are leading the company in its efforts to return to the goal of harm reduction while preventing minors from using it. The Juul 2 device is currently awaiting regulatory approval in the United States; it has been on the market in the UK, but does not have biometric protection measures.
