Indonesia Mulls Tougher Regulation Of E-cigarette Marketing

According to recent reports, the Indonesian government is planning to strengthen its relatively relaxed smoking regulations in an effort to curb the increasing number of child smokers in the country.
The government is seeking to control the promotion and packaging of e-cigarettes, which have been unregulated since their legalization in 2018. The Ministry of Health is also seeking to increase the size of health warning images on tobacco packaging from 40% to 90%, ban tobacco product advertising, sponsorship, and promotion, and prohibit the sale of single cigarettes.
During a recent online seminar, the Director of Health Promotion and Community Empowerment at the Ministry of Health, Imran Agus Nurali, emphasized the need for stronger measures to reduce tobacco consumption and protect future generations from the harmful effects of smoking. He noted that the number of underage smokers has been increasing every year, particularly since the legalization of e-cigarettes.
Nurali also stressed the importance of banning tobacco product (including e-cigarettes) advertising, sponsorship, and promotion, as approximately 65% of Indonesian children are exposed to tobacco advertising via TV, sales point advertising, and billboards, according to the 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey.
Currently, Indonesia is the only Southeast Asian country that still allows tobacco advertising on TV and print media. In addition to amending current tobacco regulations, the government plans to further increase tobacco consumption taxes next year.
Earlier this year, the country's Ministry of Finance raised tobacco consumption taxes by 12%, resulting in an average price increase of 35% for tobacco products.
While these measures may be a step in the right direction towards reducing tobacco use and protecting children from its harmful effects, it will take collective effort from the government and society to truly make a positive impact. Effective education campaigns and support for smoking cessation programs can also be valuable tools in reducing tobacco use in Indonesia.
