In Wales, UK, supermarkets have been ordered to close for three months for selling illegal cigarettes and e-cigarettes

On February 8, the mini supermarket in Wrexham, Wales, UK, was ordered to close for three months until April 29 by the local magistrates court for repeatedly selling illegal cigarettes and electronic cigarettes. The sale of illegal e-cigarettes and tobacco poses a threat to children's health and the UK government is pushing ahead with new legislation to support its goal of a smoke-free Wales by 2030.
According to leaderlive on February 11, 2025, the Kalar mini supermarket in Wrexham, Wales, UK, was ordered to close for three months by the local magistrates court for repeated sales of illegal cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and the closure period will last until April 29, 2025.

The closure order was based on an application submitted by trading standards officers, who detailed repeated sales and seizures of illegal cigarettes and e-cigarettes at the shop.

Councillor Hugh Jones, Wrexham Council's head of public protection, said:

"The rapid increase in the use of e-cigarettes among people who have never smoked, as well as among children, is very concerning. It is great to see that the Welsh Government is taking forward new legislation to control the supply of illegal e-cigarettes and tobacco and to support the Welsh Government's aim to achieve a smoke-free Wales by 2030."
