Recently, Brian King, the head of the Tobacco Products Center of the US FDA, was relieved of his position and transferred to the Indian Health Service. Dozens of other staff members of the center also received dismissal notices, including two office employees who were responsible for drafting new tobacco regulations and formulating policies.
In recent years, the Tobacco Products Center of the US FDA has faced criticism from various parties.
Politicians, parents, and anti-tobacco organizations hope that the FDA will take more measures to ban unauthorized e-cigarette products that may attract teenagers, many of which are imported from China. Meanwhile, tobacco companies and e-cigarette companies claim that the FDA has approved new tobacco products (including e-cigarettes) for adult smokers too slowly, and these products usually have much lower risks than traditional cigarettes.
Brian King joined the FDA in 2022. Under his leadership, the FDA rejected millions of applications for flavored e-cigarettes for PMTA (Premarket Tobacco Product Application), citing the lack of sufficient data to prove that these products are helpful for adult smokers. These rejections led to multiple lawsuits filed by e-cigarette manufacturers against the FDA. However, during his tenure at the FDA, the number of American teenagers using e-cigarettes has dropped to a new low in a decade.
