The Canadian Minister of Mental Health and Addiction Affairs has announced an upcoming ban on e-cigarette flavors, which will limit e-cigarette flavors to only mint, menthol, and tobacco.

According to Headtopics on October 20th, the Canadian Minister of Mental Health and Addiction Affairs stated that the federal government will ban most flavors of electronic cigarettes nationwide. This measure is the first decision made by the federal government after more than three years of committing to implementing these regulations. The new regulations will limit the flavors of electronic cigarettes, allowing only three flavors: mint, menthol, and tobacco.

It is reported that Health Canada has pointed out that various flavors of electronic cigarettes are considered one of the reasons for the increase in the number of teenagers using electronic cigarettes. Research shows that young people are more likely to start trying e-cigarettes with fruits and sweet flavors, with nearly half of young adults having tried e-cigarettes. According to the latest Canadian Tobacco and Nicotine Survey, the majority of new e-cigarette users (86%) have never smoked a cigarette.

Experts have pointed out that in areas where e-cigarette flavors are prohibited, such as Quebec, there has already emerged an easily accessible illegal market. Flory Doucas, co director of the Quebec Tobacco Control Alliance, stated that this is precisely why the federal government now needs to implement a nationwide taste ban.

Dukas said that the nicotine and e-cigarette industry can quickly find loopholes to circumvent new restrictions, but this should not be a reason for the federal government to hesitate. Sam Tam, President of the Canadian Electronic Cigarette Association, pointed out that adult smokers rely on e-cigarettes as a choice to reduce harm, and the appealing taste makes it easier for them to switch.
