Switzerland to Ban Electronic Cigarette Advertising Targeted at Minors
The Swiss government announced on May 24th that it will implement the resolution passed in last year's referendum to prohibit the advertising of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes aimed at minors.
The Swiss government will strengthen the existing restrictions, banning advertising on platforms and media without age restrictions. The new regulations will take effect in mid-2026, and stricter restrictions on tobacco and electronic cigarette packaging and advertising will take effect from next year.
This move will affect print media, online advertising, and festival events.
According to the Swiss government, smoking is still relatively common in Switzerland. In 2022, 6.9% of Swiss teenagers aged 11-15 smoked in the past month, while 5.7% of young people aged 15-24 used electronic cigarettes at least once a month.
In the future, tobacco and electronic cigarette advertising will be prohibited in print media, shops, and events that minors can participate in. In addition, tobacco and electronic cigarette merchants will be prohibited from sponsoring activities for those under 18 years old. Online advertising with age restrictions will be allowed.
These stricter restrictions were taken after the successful referendum on "protecting children and minors from tobacco advertising", which was passed by 57% of Swiss voters in February 2022.
These measures are being taken to ensure that young people are protected from the harmful effects of tobacco and electronic cigarettes. By reducing exposure to advertising, it is hoped that young people will be less likely to start smoking or using electronic cigarettes, thereby improving their long-term health outcomes.
