The agency called on the public to stop using and return the products after two e-cigarette products were found to contain illegal high levels of nicotine. The nicotine content of the QST Puff Flex 2800 e-cigarette exceeded 30 mg/ml, and the nicotine content in the refill of the e-cigarette oil was as high as 25.4 mg/ml.

[Two Supreme News] According to the Irish Examiner on June 5, the Irish Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued an urgent warning to e-cigarette users because illegal levels of nicotine were detected in two e-cigarette products.

The National Environmental Health Department of the HSE issued a safety alert for the two e-cigarette products, calling on the public to stop using e-cigarette products of various flavors and formulations and return them to the store where they were purchased because they contain extremely high levels of nicotine.

In Ireland, the law stipulates that the maximum concentration of nicotine in e-cigarette oil is 20 mg/ml, however, some products have a nicotine content of more than 10 mg/ml, which poses a serious risk of nicotine poisoning.

The two products include:

E-cigarette liquid: The E-LIQUID Tobaccon 24mg/ml, Ben Son 24mg/ml, USA Mix 24mg/ml
E-cigarette brand: QST Puff Flex 2800 puffs, flavors include Red Bull, Peach Ice, Blueberry Ice, Watermelon Ice and Mango Ice.

HSE's National Environmental Health Service, the National Office of Tobacco Control, submitted two RAPEX alert notifications to the European Security Portal (the EU's rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products) after discovering that the above products contained nicotine in excess of the permitted amount (20mg/ml or 2%). HSE sampled these products and conducted laboratory analysis, and found that the nicotine content in the refills of the e-liquid was as high as 25.4mg/ml, while the nicotine content of the QST Puff Flex 2800 e-cigarette was over 30mg/ml.

In response, HSE has contacted the distributors and importers of the two products to make them aware of the issue and will follow up as required.

HSE Environmental Health Officer Dr Maurice Mulcahy said:

"I must remind manufacturers and importers of e-cigarettes and refill containers (e-liquid) that they have a responsibility to ensure that the products fully comply with all regulatory requirements."

He reminded retailers that they must also ensure that the products they purchase from importers and distributors have been notified to HSE and comply with all regulatory requirements. The department will not hesitate to exercise statutory enforcement powers if products on the market are found not to comply with regulatory requirements.
