According to an article by angelorigon on August 6th, Brazilian female congresswoman Cristina Silvestri (PP) submitted a bill on August 5th to the Legislative Assembly of Paraná State, proposing to update the "no smoking" signs across the state. The proposal aims to clearly prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes.
Cristina Silvestri stated that although the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) has banned the production, sale, and import of electronic cigarette products since 2009, given the continuous growth in electronic cigarette consumption, this measure strengthens protection of public health, especially for young people.
"The usage of electronic cigarettes has increased dramatically. We need to update the law to clearly stipulate that these devices are also prohibited in public places."
The bill stipulates that each place will have 120 days to replace or adjust its signs, which must include the following statement: "According to the current state law, smoking cigarettes and electronic cigarettes is prohibited in this place." Additionally, the signs must include images of traditional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes, and superimposed with the prohibition symbol.
This initiative marks the beginning of another "Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Asthma and Smoking Awareness Week". The date was determined by the 21.943/2024 law drafted by Cristina Silvestri.
The proposal has now been submitted to the Constitutional and Judicial Committee of Aleppo Province for review, and will then be submitted to various thematic committees for review, and ultimately voted on at the plenary session. If the bill is approved, those who do not comply with the new regulations will be subject to the same penalties as those for smoking in public places as per Federal Law No. 9294/1996.
