The United States Allocated $3.9 Million To Assess The Impact Of E-cigarette Flavors

Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States awarded Ohio State University researchers a grant of $3.9 million to evaluate the effects of electronic cigarette flavors on smoking behavior. This research project will be jointly led by Dr. Theodore Wagner, Director of the Tobacco Research Center at Ohio State University, and Dr. Tracy Smith, at the Hollings Cancer Center of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Approximately 1,500 cigarette users from across the U.S. will participate in the study.

Flavored electronic cigarettes have been under fire for their appeal to young people, and the FDA is currently making regulatory decisions on this matter. This research project at Ohio State University will provide critical data to aid the FDA in making more informed decisions on public health policies that will have lasting impact.

According to Dr. Wagner, "This new study will generate key data to help inform regulatory decisions that are impactful to public health. The findings of this study will guide important policy decisions pertaining to the regulation of electronic cigarettes."

The research project will evaluate the impact of electronic cigarette flavors on the intensity of smoking behavior, addictive behavior, and the perception of e-cigarette-related harm. The impact of e-cigarette flavors on cigarette cessation attempts will also be evaluated.

This study is vital, as it will provide much-needed information about the effects of flavored electronic cigarettes on smoking behavior. The findings will have a significant impact on public health policy, and could potentially lead to greater regulation of these products.

In conclusion, the grant awarded to Ohio State University is an important step forward in addressing the health risks posed by flavored electronic cigarettes. With more information on their impact on smoking behavior, policymakers will be better equipped to protect public health.
