The Russian Ministry of Health supports a draft law aimed at prohibiting the sale of tobacco products and nicotine containing products to individuals born after 2009, in order to reduce tobacco consumption and gradually phase out tobacco products.

 

According to Ura On October 24th, News reported that the Russian Ministry of Health has expressed support for a draft law initiated by the "New Citizens" (Новыелюди) aimed at banning the sale of tobacco products and nicotine containing products to people born after December 31, 2009.

 

The Kommersant newspaper stated that,

 

This project is in line with the basic policy of the country to reduce the consumption of tobacco and nicotine containing products. This strategy highlights the health sector's strategy to gradually phase out tobacco products by 2035. Although budget revenue may decrease due to the reduction of consumption tax, the draft law also takes into account the potential cost savings in treating diseases caused by smoking

 

The media reported that the federal government's opinion on this draft law was sent to relevant departments on October 19, 2024. In addition, the Russian Ministry of Health is also preparing to support initiatives aimed at reducing the use of electronic cigarettes.
