According to the Fox8Live news report on April 25th: The bill supported by Governor Landry will raise the price of e-cigarettes and impose a 33% tax; some enterprises have stated that this bill targets legal buyers.
The Louisiana legislative body is currently considering a new bill that may change this situation. The 517th House Bill initiated by Representative Ken Bras (Democrat - Vacherie) will completely reform the state's taxation method for e-cigarettes. This bill will impose a 33% tax on the retail prices of e-cigarettes and electronic cigarettes, instead of the current 15 cents per milliliter for e-cigarette liquid.
For an e-cigarette product priced at $20, this means an additional $6.60 needs to be paid before the sales tax.
Shoprite's CEO, Mike Donahue, warned that this tax will drive business to other states. Neighboring states such as Texas, Mississippi, and Arkansas do not impose consumption taxes on e-cigarettes.
"There will be cross-border sales. This is not a good business decision. It cannot solve the problem," he said. "They are unwilling to pay more for goods that had the same price before but have different prices later."
Despite opposition, the bill was passed by a 9-6 vote in the committee. Currently, the bill will be submitted to the House for debate. The debate date has not been determined.
