After The Implementation Of The Ban On Disposable Electronic Cigarettes in The UK, More Than 60% Of Consumers Are Expected To Turn To The Black Market.

A recent survey shows that as the UK plans to implement a one-off ban on electronic cigarettes from June 1st, over 60% of users of disposable electronic cigarettes are considering turning to the black market to purchase related products. This survey, commissioned by Evapo Electronic Cigarettes, reveals that the proposed legislation is causing significant unintended consequences - as the government plans to significantly increase taxes on electronic cigarette products, this ban has raised concerns about public health and smoking cessation efforts.
The survey reveals consumers' craving for cheaper alternatives: nearly 30% of respondents said that rising costs might force them to resume smoking traditional cigarettes. At the same time, 27% of respondents said they plan to purchase counterfeit or untaxed products to avoid additional expenses. Notably, 44% of respondents are worried that the tax increase will not only lead electronic cigarette users to resume smoking traditional cigarettes but also hinder current smokers from attempting to quit.
Although there are concerns about the channels through which teenagers obtain electronic cigarettes, the survey results once again confirm the important role of electronic cigarettes in assisting smoking cessation - two-thirds (67%) of disposable electronic cigarette users claim that these products helped them completely quit traditional cigarettes. Moreover, 93% of the surveyed electronic cigarette users said that electronic cigarettes had a positive impact on their smoking cessation process.
Over a quarter (27%) of electronic cigarette users plan to stockpile products before the ban takes effect. This behavior not only reflects a clear market demand but also indicates a potential trend of the emergence of an underground market. This trend is in line with international experiences in countries such as Australia and the United States, where bans and tax increase policies have led to a surge in illegal electronic cigarette sales.
"These survey results reveal a very realistic unintended consequence," said Andre Kutruff, the CEO of Evapo. He called for the formulation of balanced regulatory policies to ensure that adults can legally obtain safer alternatives while supporting responsible electronic cigarette use. Kutruff also advocated for reducing the negative impact on smoking cessation efforts through enhanced education and improved policies, to avoid a resurgence of traditional cigarette consumption.
