The Philippine Bureau Of Internal Revenue Has Intensified Its Efforts To Crack Down On The Smuggling Of Electronic Cigarettes And Cigarettes.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) of the Philippines is intensifying its law enforcement actions against smuggling activities, particularly in the e-cigarette and tobacco industries.
Romeo Lumagui, the director of the BIR, stated at a press conference on Thursday that this is part of the overall efforts of the Marcos government, not only to address illegal trade and the loss of government revenue, but also to address the harm to public health caused by products that enter the market without inspection or approval.
He said that the BIR has been continuously cracking down on illegal trade, including destroying counterfeit and untaxed cigarettes and filing criminal lawsuits against offenders.
The BIR recently conducted surprise raids on an illegal cigarette factory and warehouse in San Simón City, Pangasinan Province, and filed a tax evasion lawsuit of 8.5 billion Philippine pesos against several Chinese nationals and several companies.
The Philippines also recently destroyed smuggled electronic cigarette products worth 3.26 billion Philippine pesos, marking another milestone in the government's intensified efforts to combat illegal trade - this operation was led by the BIR and the Bureau of Customs.
President Ferdinand Marcos attended the destruction event and expressed appreciation for the BIR's continuous law enforcement efforts, noting that the tax authority has been actively seizing warehouses to cooperate with the government's anti-illegal trade actions.
Meanwhile, legitimate enterprises in the Philippines have strongly supported the government's actions against illegal trade and emphasized that smugglers and illegal traders have caused unfair competition.
Hesus Alanza, the president of the Philippine Chamber of Industry, said: "Smuggling has brought unfair competition to locally produced products because it erodes the local market, cheaper, VAT-free or substandard imported products have replaced locally produced goods." Illegal smuggling activities have undermined the regulatory environment and are detrimental to enterprises that conscientiously comply with tax obligations and legal standards.
