EU Promotes Smoke-free Environment Plan, Poland Accused Of Negative Attitude Towards Anti-smoking Bill

EU promotes smoke-free environment plan, Poland accused of negative attitude towards anti-smoking bill

欧盟推进无烟环境计划 波兰被指对禁烟法案态度消极

The EU plans to achieve a smoke-free future by 2040. Poland supports it but has difficulty in advancing it. It has not actively strengthened anti-smoking regulations, which has affected the tobacco product market.

On December 18, according to Polish media rynekzdrowia, the EU hopes to cultivate an almost completely smoke-free generation by 2040, that is, the proportion of smoking population will drop to 5% (currently 24%). To this end, the European Parliament recently passed a resolution aimed at creating an environment that is completely free from any form of cigarettes and aerosol smoke.

The report pointed out that Poland has supported the resolution. However, when asked whether the country's Ministry of Health plans to change regulations to strengthen the ban on smoking in public places, no response has been received. According to unofficial sources, the Polish government is not active in further strengthening the existing ban.

It is worth noting that although the regulations on restricting the sale of e-cigarettes have been mentioned for almost a year, Poland has not adopted the relevant laws. On Wednesday, December 18, the government was supposed to review the draft amendment to the law on protecting health from the effects of tobacco and its products, but the project was not on the agenda again. The Ministry of Health said this is a very complicated matter.

The draft eventually withdrew a total ban on so-called "snuff" (synthetic nicotine pouches in different flavors, such as mojito, cola and mint), but only prohibited sales to people under 18. In addition, amendments aimed at banning the sale of heated tobacco cartridges have also stalled, although Poland should have implemented it more than a year ago. Because about 80% of heater users in Poland prefer flavored cartridges, the ban may not be beneficial to large tobacco companies and Polish tobacco producers.
