Why is it cold when I hit my vape?

When you inhale e-cigarettes and feel a cool sensation, it is mainly because the e-liquid contains specific cooling agents. This is directly related to the various "flavors" we discussed earlier and is designed by manufacturers to enhance the taste.
❄️ The source of the cool sensation
This cool sensation does not come from the low temperature. Instead, the cooling agent components stimulate the cold-sensitive receptors in your mouth and throat (especially the "TRPM8" receptor that is sensitive to low temperatures), causing the brain to generate the illusion of "coldness". There are mainly two types of components:
Component Type Common Examples Effect Characteristics Notes
Natural Flavorings Menthol (extracted from mint) Provides a refreshing sensation and has a distinct mint flavor. Also found in mint-flavored cigarettes and chewing gum.
Synthetic Coolants WS-3, WS-23, etc. (flavorless coolants) Provides a pure, crisp coolness with almost no taste, often paired with fruit flavors. Widely used in e-cigarettes, it can enhance the "throat hit" on its own.
⚠️ Health Warning to Note
Not harmless: This "cooling" experience is designed to make the inhalation feel more comfortable. It may mask the initial irritation of the throat, allowing you to accept and inhale more smoke and deeper doses, thereby potentially increasing the intake of nicotine and other harmful substances.
Lack of long-term research: Especially for synthetic coolants (such as WS-23), there is still a lack of safety data regarding their safety when inhaled over a long period, and there are unknown risks.
Not conflicting with health risks: Importantly, the cool sensation does not reduce the harmfulness of the e-cigarette itself. The e-cigarette aerosol may still contain nicotine (addictive), propylene glycol, glycerin, formaldehyde, and various harmful substances that may be produced by various flavoring agents when heated.
?? Summary
In simple terms, the cooling sensation of e-cigarettes is a form of sensory deception engineered by humans. It is achieved by activating your nerve receptors through chemical substances. It enhances the taste, but this does not mean the product is safer.
