What would happen if I put essential oils in my humidifier?

In simple terms, adding essential oils directly to a regular humidifier is extremely dangerous. It can harm your and your family's health and also damage your machine. In fact, many humidifier user manuals clearly state "only add water", because doing so has two main risks:
??‍⚕️ Health Risks
Causing "Humidifier Pneumonia": This is the most serious issue. When essential oil molecules enter the lungs, they will stimulate the respiratory tract mucosa, potentially triggering inflammation, which is commonly known as "Humidifier Pneumonia". For people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, these chemical irritations may directly trigger or exacerbate their conditions.
Damage to respiratory tract: When essential oils are atomized by a humidifier, they turn into extremely tiny particles. These particles will enter our respiratory tract directly through breathing, causing discomfort such as coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
Inducing allergic reactions: The chemical components of essential oils may become new allergens, causing symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and skin rashes.
⚙️ Damage to the humidifier
Corrosion damage: The water tank of the humidifier is mostly made of plastic, and essential oils may have corrosive properties towards plastic. Long-term use can cause cracks in the water tank or internal parts, thereby damaging the machine.
Favoring bacterial growth: When essential oils are added to water, they do not fully dissolve. The remaining substances will adhere to the water tank and the atomizer, becoming a breeding ground for bacteria and making the machine even more difficult to clean.
Blocking device: The oily residue of essential oils can clog the atomizing plates, nozzles or evaporation cores of the ultrasonic humidifier, resulting in reduced or even complete absence of mist output, thereby affecting the humidification effect.
?? How can one enjoy the fragrance?
One can purchase a dedicated aromatherapy machine or humidifier. These products usually have separate oil tanks, which can prevent the oil from directly contacting the core components.
?? Additional note: If you have pets at home, especially birds or cats, you need to be extra cautious. Their respiratory systems are very fragile, and many essential oils are toxic to them and can cause severe poisoning reactions.
Overall, the safest approach is to follow the principle of "only adding water to the humidifier" and leave the task of using the aromatherapy device to the professional humidifier. I hope this information will help you protect your family and the machines at home!
