What happens if an e-cigarette gets dropped in water?

Of course. This is a common accident, and the right response is crucial for safety.

If an e-cigarette or vape mod is dropped in water, here's what happens and what you should do immediately, broken down into clear steps.

The Immediate Dangers and Effects

Short Circuit: This is the most immediate and critical risk. Water can cause a direct short circuit within the battery. A short-circuited lithium-ion battery can overheat very rapidly, potentially leading to a fire or explosion.

Permanent Damage: Water can corrode and destroy the internal circuitry, chipset, and wiring. Even if it doesn't short out immediately, the device may be permanently damaged and unusable.

Compromised Safety Features: The device's chipset is responsible for safety protections (over-charge, short-circuit, etc.). Water damage can disable these features, making the device unsafe to use even if it appears to work later.

What to Do Immediately: A Step-by-Step Guide

Your primary goals are to prevent a short circuit and dry the device completely.

Step 1: Retrieve It Quickly

Get the device out of the water as soon as possible. The longer it's submerged, the more water it will take in.

Step 2: Power Off Immediately

If the device has a power button, turn it off immediately. If it's a "draw-activated" device with no button, you cannot do this, so proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Remove the Power Source

This is the most critical safety step.

If it's a device with a removable battery: Open the compartment and take the battery out immediately. This eliminates the risk of a short circuit. Handle the battery carefully and look for any signs of damage, heat, or corrosion.

If it's a device with a built-in battery (like a pod system or disposable): You cannot remove the power source. You must handle the entire device with extreme caution.

Step 4: Disassemble Everything

Separate the tank/pod from the battery mod.

Remove the coil if possible.

Take off the mouthpiece.

The more you can take apart, the better you can dry it.

Step 5: Dry Thoroughly

Wipe Down: Use a dry paper towel or cloth to carefully pat dry every component you can access.

Use Absorbents: Place the disassembled components (but NOT the battery itself) in a bag or bowl of uncooked rice or silica gel packets. These are excellent desiccants that will pull moisture out. Leave it there for at least 24-48 hours.

Do NOT Use Heat: Avoid using a hairdryer, oven, or microwave. High heat can damage the battery, electronics, and plastic parts, creating an even bigger hazard.

After Drying: The Critical Check

After waiting at least 24-48 hours, reassemble the device.

Inspect for Damage: Look for any signs of water residue, corrosion (a white or greenish crust on metal parts), or swelling of the battery. If the battery is swollen, do not use it.

Check the Battery: If you have a removable battery, check it for any unusual smells, heat, or damage. If in doubt, recycle it safely.

The First Test: If everything looks normal, try turning the device on. Do not attach the tank yet. If it doesn't turn on, or behaves erratically (flashing lights, error messages), it is dead.

Test with Caution: If the battery mod seems to work, attach the tank and take a very small, cautious test puff. Listen for any unusual gurgling or crackling.

The Bottom Line: Is It Safe to Use?

Probably not. Even if it seems to work after drying, the internal corrosion may have already caused damage that can lead to future failure or safety risks.

For a cheap pod device or disposable: It is safest to simply replace it. The risk is not worth the cost of a new device.

For an expensive mod: You might be tempted to save it, but you must be vigilant. If you decide to use it, monitor it closely for the next few charges and uses. If it gets hot, acts erratically, or produces a strange smell, stop using it immediately and recycle it.

When in doubt, throw it out. Your safety is more important than the device. Properly dispose of it at an electronics or battery recycling center.
