A U.S. poll shows that nicotine consumers have become a key group for Trump's victory, with a support rate of 56%, among which nicotine pouch users are most inclined to support Trump.

According to the British Daily Mail on December 16, a new poll shows that nicotine users have become an important voter group for Donald Trump's victory in November. The survey found that users of tobacco, e-cigarettes, tobacco pouches or nicotine pouches like ZYN are more likely to support the Republican candidate.

Cygnal's poll surveyed 2,200 nicotine users who participated in the vote, and the results showed that 56% voted for Trump. This proportion is 6% higher than the 49% support he received in the overall general election. At the same time, only 40% of respondents voted for the current Vice President Kamala Harris.

Further analysis shows that users of tobacco pouches or nicotine pouches, especially fans of the ZYN brand, such as Robert Kennedy Jr. and Tucker Carlson, are most likely to vote for Trump. Among these users, 62% support the Republican Party, while only 33% support Harris.

Cygnal found that two-thirds of nicotine pouch users voted for Trump.

For traditional cigarette users, 57% tend to support Trump, while 40% support Harris. Among e-cigarette users, 54% voted for Trump and 43% supported Harris. In addition, as the Biden administration has promoted the menthol cigarette ban in recent years, 54% of menthol cigarette users said they chose to support Trump.

Biden restarted the proposal to ban menthol tobacco products in 2021, however, earlier this year, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra announced that the ban would be suspended, citing the need for more discussion.

The survey also showed that minority nicotine users are more inclined to Trump. In the 2024 election, a whopping 47% of Hispanic nicotine users said they voted for Trump, compared to Trump's 37% support among Hispanic voters that year; in 2016, Trump only received 28% support from Hispanic voters, while in 2020, the proportion was 32%; 31% of black nicotine users voted for Trump in the 2024 election, which is 13% higher than the overall support of the Republican Party among black voters, which is about 18%; in the 2020 election, Biden received the support of about 90% of black voters. In 2024, Trump's vote share among black voters doubled, winning one-fifth of the vote.

For Democrats, the result may be partly attributed to their promotion of a ban on menthol cigarettes. This product is more popular among black nicotine users than other groups.

Democratic Rep. Don Davis opposed the menthol ban, saying that the policy is unpopular in his district and that more measures can be taken to solve the problem besides the ban.

The survey found that 54% of menthol users voted for Trump. Many of these menthol users said they voted for Trump after hearing about the federal government's push to ban menthol products.

In addition, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has warned that ZYN is targeting the youth market with social media advertising and called on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate.
