Switzerland to ban e-cigarette ads to teens

The Swiss government said on May 24 that it would implement a resolution adopted in a referendum last year to ban advertising of tobacco products and e-cigarettes to young people.

The Swiss government will tighten planned restrictions by banning advertising in venues and media with no age restrictions. The new regulations will come into effect in mid-2026, with enhanced restrictions on tobacco and e-cigarette packaging and advertising starting next year.

The move will affect print media, online advertising and festivals.

Smoking remains relatively common in Switzerland, the Swiss government said. In 2022, 6.9% of Swiss youth aged 11-15 have smoked cigarettes in the past month, while 5.7% of youth aged 15-24 have used e-cigarettes at least once a month.

In the future, advertising of tobacco products or e-cigarettes will be prohibited in print media, in stores and at events where minors can participate. In addition, tobacco and e-cigarette businesses are prohibited from sponsoring events attended by young people under the age of 18. Age-restricted online advertising is allowed.

These tighter restrictions follow the success of the referendum on "Protecting children and young people from tobacco advertising", which passed with 57% of Swiss voters in February 2022.
