Nicotine pouches entering the Middle East spark concerns, Lebanese lawmakers call for tighter taxation and regulation

Lebanese MPs warn that Übbs menthol-flavored nicotine pouches are invading the Lebanese market, calling for tighter regulation and higher taxes to address their potential harm to young people's health.
According to Lebanondebate on August 13, MP Bilal Abdallah, chairman of the Lebanese Parliament's Health Committee, warned about the introduction of a new nicotine product, Übbs menthol-flavored nicotine pouches, in Lebanon.

The warning follows a statement by Tobacco Free Control Project and activist Dr. Ghazi Zaatari.
In an interview with the media, the MP expressed concern about the entry of such products into the Lebanese market.
"We need to understand how these dangerous products are imported. Our main goal is to increase taxes and fees on these items in accordance with international practices. If we prevent them from entering, they are likely to be smuggled, which is a key issue we are addressing."
"This product is popular among young people due to its high nicotine content. As a doctor, I warn of the dangers of this product, especially in Lebanon, where smoking rates are high and cancer cases are increasing accordingly."
"The health sector is performing its duties with extremely limited resources. Minister of Health Dr. Firass Abiad is working at full capacity, mobilizing unions and supervising drug supplies and hospital inspections. He is expected to visit hospitals and health facilities in the Chouf region next Thursday."
Übbs is a nicotine pouch manufacturer that was founded in the UK in 2022.
