How to make your own vape pen oil?

Making your own "vape oil" generally refers to one of two things: standard nicotine e-liquid or THC/CBD cannabis oil. Both require precision and strict safety measures, but the processes and risks are quite different.

If you plan to mix your own e-liquid, you're entering a space that requires care and accuracy. If you're considering making THC oil, you must understand the significant safety and legal risks involved.

⚠️ Critical Safety First

Regardless of what you're making, safety is non-negotiable.

Nicotine is Toxic: Concentrated nicotine can be absorbed through your skin. Always wear nitrile gloves and work in a well-ventilated area away from children and pets .

Avoid Oil-Based Flavorings: For standard e-liquid, never use essential oils or oil-based extracts. Inhaling lipids (fats) can cause lipoid pneumonia, a serious lung condition. Only use flavorings specifically labeled for vaping .

Label Everything: Immediately label every bottle you make with the date, nicotine strength, and flavor. This prevents accidental misuse .

🧴 1. Making Standard Nicotine E-Liquid (The Safer DIY)

This involves mixing four basic ingredients to create the e-liquid used in most vapes.

The Ingredients

Component Role Important Note
Vegetable Glycerin (VG) Produces thick vapor clouds; adds a slight sweetness. High VG (70%+) is best for sub-ohm devices for large clouds .
Propylene Glycol (PG) Carries flavor and provides a "throat hit" like a cigarette. Thinner liquid; higher PG is better for small pod systems .
Flavor Concentrates Provides the taste (fruit, dessert, menthol, etc.). Only use vape-specific concentrates. Never use oil-based extracts .
Nicotine (Optional) Satisfies cravings. Usually sold in 100% PG base. Handle with extreme care .

Essential Equipment

Digital Scale (recommended) or graduated syringes for precise measurement .

Empty bottles (plastic "unicorn" bottles or amber glass) .

Nitrile gloves and safety glasses .

An online e-liquid calculator to determine exact recipe amounts .

The Mixing Process (by weight)

Prepare: Put on your gloves and place an empty bottle on the digital scale. Press "tare" to zero it out .

Add Nicotine: Using a calculator, add the precise weight of nicotine to the bottle. Never eyeball this .

Add Flavors: Tare the scale again, then add the flavor concentrates one by one.

Add Base Liquids: Tare again. Add the PG first (thinner), then the VG (thicker) until you hit the final weight.

Shake Vigorously: Close the bottle and shake it hard for at least 1-2 minutes to ensure everything is fully combined .

Steep (Wait): Store the bottle in a cool, dark place.

Fruit flavors: 1-3 days .

Dessert/Tobacco flavors: 1-4 weeks to allow complex notes to develop .

Simple Starter Recipe (60ml, 70% VG / 30% PG, 3mg Nicotine)

This "Tropical Citrus Ice" is great for beginners .

Nicotine: 1 x 10ml (18mg) nicotine shot.

Flavor: 9ml (15%) of Just Juice Ice Citron & Coconut.

VG: Top up the bottle to the 60ml mark with Vegetable Glycerin.

🌿 2. Making THC / Cannabis Oil (High Risk)

Warning: This process involves significant risks: fire hazards from using flammable solvents (like butane or alcohol), potential for toxic contamination if solvents aren't fully purged, and it is illegal in many jurisdictions . If you are in a legal area, the safest option is to buy lab-tested products from a licensed dispensary.

If you choose to proceed, the most common beginner method is an alcohol extraction .

The Process

Decarboxylate (Activate): Grind your cannabis and bake it on a tray at 220-240°F (105-115°C) for 30-40 minutes. This activates the THC .

Extract: Soak the decarboxylated cannabis in high-proof, food-grade ethanol (like Everclear). Let it sit for a few hours, shaking occasionally .

Strain and Evaporate: Strain out the plant material using cheesecloth. Then, using a double boiler (never direct heat), evaporate the alcohol until you're left with a concentrated "honey oil" .

Mix with Vape Base: Combine this oil with a vape-ready carrier like a PG/VG mix or specialized terpenes to thin it out for a cartridge .

Safer Alternative: Instead of vaping, consider using your cannabis to make edibles (like brownies or gummies) using a simple olive oil infusion. This completely eliminates the risks associated with inhalation and solvent use .

🛠️ Troubleshooting & Pro Tips

Harsh Throat Hit: Usually too much PG or not enough steeping. Try increasing your VG ratio or let the bottle sit for another week .

Weak Flavor: Your flavor percentage might be too low (start around 10-15%), or the VG is too high (VG doesn't carry flavor as well as PG) .

Muddy Flavor: You added too many different flavors. Stick to recipes with 2-4 ingredients until you get more experience .
