Why do I shiver when I vape?

It's a common experience, especially for new vapers, but it can happen to anyone. Shivering or feeling a chill when you vape is usually linked to how nicotine affects your body.

Here's a breakdown of the most likely reasons, from the most common to the less frequent.

1. The Nicotine Effect (The Most Common Cause)

Nicotine is a powerful stimulant, and it has several direct effects on your body that can lead to shivering:

Vasoconstriction: Nicotine causes your blood vessels to tighten and narrow (constrict). This reduces blood flow to your skin and extremities (like your hands and feet). With less warm blood reaching your skin, you can feel a sudden chill or cold, which triggers your body to shiver in an attempt to generate heat.

Adrenaline Release: Nicotine stimulates the release of adrenaline (epinephrine). This "fight or flight" hormone increases your heart rate and blood pressure and can also cause muscle twitches or tremors, which can feel like shivering.

Stimulation of the Nervous System: As a neurostimulant, nicotine directly affects the part of your brain that regulates body temperature and muscle control. This can sometimes manifest as shivering or tremors, especially if the dose is a bit high for your tolerance.

Think of it like drinking a strong coffee on an empty stomach-you might get the "jitters." Vaping can give you the "nic-shivers."

2. The Propylene Glycol (PG) Cooling Sensation

The e-liquid in your vape contains a base liquid, usually a mix of Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG).

PG is known for its "throat hit," but it also has a slight cooling effect as it vaporizes. For some people with heightened sensitivity, this physical sensation of coolness in the throat and lungs can be misinterpreted by the brain as the body being cold, potentially triggering a shiver response.

3. Psychological or Conditional Response

Sometimes, the cause isn't purely physical.

Expectation/Placebo: If you've heard about or experienced the "nic-shivers" before, the simple act of vaping can trigger a conditioned response. Your brain expects a sensation, so it creates one.

Sensory Overload: The combination of the flavor, the throat hit, the cloud, and the nicotine rush can be a strong sensory experience that momentarily overwhelms your system, leading to a physical reaction like a shiver.

4. Less Common but Important Causes

Allergic Reaction or Sensitivity: While rare, some people can be sensitive or mildly allergic to an ingredient in the vape juice (a specific flavoring, PG, or even the nicotine itself). Shivering can be a minor symptom of this. If you also experience a rash, itching, or difficulty breathing, stop immediately and consult a doctor.

Nicotine Strength is Too High: If you've recently switched to a device with higher nicotine (like moving from a pod system to a powerful mod) or are using a higher strength e-liquid than you're used to, the intense nicotine hit can easily cause shivering and other side effects like dizziness or nausea.

What You Can Do About It

Check Your Nicotine Strength: This is the first thing to look at. If you're getting strong shivers, you might be using a nicotine level that's too high for you. Try switching to a lower-nicotine e-liquid.

Slow Down Your Pacing: Take fewer puffs and space them out more. Chain-vaping delivers a large dose of nicotine very quickly, which is a surefire way to induce shivers and nausea (often called "nic-sick").

Stay Hydrated: Both PG and VG are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture. This can contribute to dehydration, which can make you feel cold. Drink plenty of water when you vape.

Ensure You're Eating: Vaping on an empty stomach will make the effects of nicotine much more pronounced and can lead to shivering.

Try a Different E-Liquid: If you suspect PG is the culprit, try a e-liquid with a higher VG ratio (e.g., 70% VG / 30% PG) to see if the shivering subsides.

When to Be Concerned:
While shivering is usually harmless and temporary, if it's severe, is accompanied by chest pain, significant shortness of breath, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, or confusion, you should seek medical attention, as these could be signs of a more serious reaction.

In summary, the shiver you feel is most likely a direct physical reaction to nicotine, causing your blood vessels to constrict and giving you a chill, combined with its stimulant effect on your nervous system.
