How do hotels know if you smoke?

Hotels use a combination of technology, training, and physical evidence to detect smoking. Here are the most common methods:
Smoke detectors – Most hotel rooms have hardwired, photoelectric, or ionization smoke detectors. These are sensitive to even small amounts of smoke from cigarettes, cigars, or vaping. Some systems are tied directly to the front desk, triggering an immediate alert.
Dedicated smoking sensors – Many hotels now install standalone "smoking sensors" (e.g., from companies like FreshAir or Halo). These devices detect chemicals in cigarette/vape smoke-not just particulates-so they aren't fooled by steam from a shower or burnt toast. They can even differentiate between tobacco and cannabis.
Housekeeping checks – Staff are trained to look for telltale signs: ash residue, burn marks on carpet/furniture/bedding, lingering odor, air freshener or towels stuffed under doors, or a recently opened window. They also check ashtrays, trash cans, and HVAC vents.
Odor – Smoke smell clings to fabric (curtains, carpets, upholstery, bedding). Even if you try to air out the room, the residual odor is often noticeable to housekeeping within minutes. Some hotels use ozone machines or UV lights to verify smoke residue.
Neighboring guest complaints – Smoke travels through shared ventilation, under doors, or onto balconies. If a nearby guest complains about smell or sees smoke drifting, the hotel will investigate your room.
Electronic key logs – If you step outside frequently (e.g., to smoke on a balcony or near an exit), the key card system records your comings and goings. While not proof alone, it can support other evidence.
Hidden fees in the contract – When you check in, you agree to a no-smoking policy. Many hotels place a hold on your credit card for a cleaning fee (often $200–$500). If evidence is found, they charge it automatically-you then have to dispute it with proof.
Bottom line: Trying to hide smoking is very difficult. Modern sensors are hard to fool, and housekeeping checks thoroughly. The safest option is to smoke only in designated outdoor areas away from the building.
