Director of the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration: E-cigarettes must be managed as therapeutic products

Professor Tony Lawler, Director of the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), spoke at a conference, emphasizing that only e-cigarette products that meet TGA standards can be imported and sold in Australia. E-cigarettes must be managed as therapeutic products, which is why they are not sold in retail environments.
According to pledgetimes on August 6, Professor Tony Lawler, Director of the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), emphasized at a conference that the Therapeutic Goods Order 100 will ensure the quality and safety of therapeutic e-cigarette products. He acknowledged that pharmacists face challenges in evaluating unregistered products, pointing out that regulatory reforms and strengthened border control measures help manage imported products. Such products must be managed as therapeutic products, which is why they are not sold in retail environments.
He assured pharmacy professionals that the responsibility for ensuring the safety of e-cigarette products for the public does not rest solely on community pharmacists.
He also emphasized strict controls on e-cigarette concentrations, flavors and colors, and pointed out that e-cigarettes are being withdrawn from retail environments to ensure that they are managed by health professionals. He emphasized that only e-cigarette products that meet TGA standards can be imported and sold in Australia.
It is reported that the TGA and Queensland Health Department recently carried out a two-day joint enforcement operation, seizing more than 10,000 nicotine bags and hundreds of illegal e-cigarette products. The seized e-cigarettes are suspected of violating the new commercial possession laws under the Therapeutic Products and Other Legislation Amendment (E-cigarette Reform) Act, which came into effect on July 1 this year. These laws stipulate that Australian retailers are not allowed to provide any e-cigarette products even with a prescription, and are prohibited from possessing e-cigarettes in retail premises.
