The "cannabis vape pen" is an electronic device used to heat and inhale concentrated cannabis substances (such as cannabis oil, wax, etc.). It often resembles a regular e-cigarette in appearance, but the key difference lies in the fact that its e-liquid contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) - the main hallucinogenic and addictive component of cannabis.
Main Product Types
The following are the main types that are currently popular in the market:
Single-use/replaceable cartridge pens (Vape Pens): The most common type, consisting of a battery and pre-filled cartridges. The e-liquid is usually a highly pure extract with an extremely high THC content.
Dab Pens / Wax Pens: These are specifically designed for heating wax-like, crushed, or resin-like concentrated cannabis substances. Their potency is usually higher than that of regular vape cartridges.
⚠️ Main Risks and Hazards
The popularity of marijuana pens is accompanied by extremely high health and legal risks, which are mainly manifested in the following aspects:
Extremely high THC concentration and immediate potency: This is the core risk of it. The THC content of traditional marijuana is approximately 10-25%, while the THC content of marijuana pen concentrates can reach 50-80%, or even 70-95%. When high concentrations of THC are inhaled, they will take effect quickly, easily leading to symptoms such as acute anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia, hallucinations, accelerated heart rate and blood pressure spikes.
Severe lung damage: The marijuana pen is directly associated with a serious lung disease known as "EVALI" (E-cigarette-Related Lung Injury). This disease can lead to acute respiratory failure and even death. Part of the reason for this is the diluents such as vitamin E acetate commonly added to the e-liquid, as well as the carcinogens like benzene and formaldehyde produced during heating.
Chemical pollutants and heavy metal exposure: Black market products often contain solvents such as butane that remain from the manufacturing process, as well as pesticides and heavy metals like lead and nickel from the equipment itself. Long-term inhalation of these substances can damage the lungs and may cause neurotoxicity.
Addiction and Mental Health Risks: High concentrations of THC are highly likely to lead to dependence and cannabis use disorder (CUD).
