Australian police cracked a major smuggling case and seized A$2.3 million in illegal tobacco and e-cigarettes

The Australian Crime Command's Drug and Firearms Squad successfully intercepted a suspected smuggling vehicle in Homebush West, seizing $580,000 in cash, $1.34 million worth of e-cigarettes and $240,000 in illegal tobacco, with a total amount of more than $1.55 million. Two suspects were arrested and the case is under further investigation.

 

According to the NSW Police Public Site on July 16, Australian police seized 870,000 Australian dollars (about $580,000), $2 million worth of e-cigarettes (about $1.34 million) and more than $350,000 (about $240,000) worth of illegal tobacco in Homebush West, Australia last night, with a total amount of more than $2.3 million (about $1.55 million).

 

At 4 pm local time on July 15, police from the Crime Command's Drug and Firearms Squad found a shoulder bag containing 40,000 Australian dollars (about 27,000 US dollars) in cash in a Toyota car during a vehicle interception; after a thorough search of the vehicle, the police seized a shopping bag containing 80,000 Australian dollars (about 54,000 US dollars) in cash and a suitcase containing 750,000 Australian dollars (about 500,000 US dollars) in cash, bringing the total amount of cash seized on the scene to 870,000 Australian dollars (about 580,000 US dollars).

 

The driver (37 years old) and the front passenger (34 years old) were arrested on the spot and taken to Auburn Police Station for further investigation. With the assistance of the Southwest Metropolitan Area Operational Support Group, the police executed a search warrant on a unit on Arthur Street in Homebush West at 8:10 that night. During the search, the police seized 50,000 e-cigarettes and 350,000 cigarettes, with a total value of more than 2.3 million Australian dollars (about 1.55 million US dollars) on the black market.

 

Both suspects were charged with intentionally dealing with the proceeds of crime and were refused bail. They appeared in the Burwood Local Court today (July 16, 2024). At present, the police are still conducting in-depth investigations into the case in order to uncover the criminal network behind it.
